Preparing for a New Website

When Preparing for a New Website, there are a few preliminary things you’ll want to keep in mind. Websites are powerful tools and can be used to create a tremendous amount of success for your business, but in the wrong hands can also be destructive towards your business. That said, here’s a checklist of sorts to get you started in the right direction:

  • Shop around: it’s never a bad idea to look into various companies to complete your project. Make certain these companies are credible by asking for a proposal, testimonials, and by reviewing their portfolio, as well as, checking out online reviews.
  • Your website will start with a name, or domain. This is the URL visitors will use to get to your website. If you have a trusted website company that you’re working with, they should be able to provide this for you, but feel free to register one yourself, as it’s a very simple process. If you do elect to have a company acquire your domain, make certain they keep the domain name in your name as the owner.
  • Once you have your domain, you’ll need a place to host your website. This is where your website files reside (pictures, copy, media, etc.). A quick search online will provide you with plenty of reviews and information on hosting companies if your website company hasn’t already or doesn’t offer this service in-house. Make certain, even if going through a web company, that you have a copy of all your website files.
  • Finally, READ YOUR CONTRACT. It is baffling how many people don’t read their contracts. READ IT! and don’t be afraid to ask for adjustments to be made. After all, it is legally binding.
